Indian officials pass cheap food plan

Under the newly approved bill, about 5 kg of grain, including a kilo of rice at three rupees (four pence), wheat at two rupees (three pence) and millet at one rupee (2 pence), are supplied to about 800 million poor people, state-run BBC reported.

The plan would entail an expenditure of 1.3 trillion rupees (USD 19.7 billion) every year.

The bill was ratified by the lower house of parliament in July and would become a law after it is approved by President Pranab Mukherjee.

Indian food Minister KV Thomas has hailed the plan, calling on the federal government and the states “to work hand-in-hand” to achieve the desired results.

The supporters of the scheme believe the Indian government intends to put an end to long-lasting malnutrition in the country through subsidized food plan, while the opposition criticize the government, saying the measures are just “repackaging some existing schemes” for the next year general elections.

According to the 2012 annual Global Hunger Index, India accounts for one-third of the world poor and the highest percentage of malnourished children.
