India to test new long-range missile in arms race with China

Mohan Guruswamy of the New Delhi-based Centre for Policy Alternatives said the
missile, which cost £300 million to develop, is India’s “riposte
to China’s capability”.

“China can cover any part of India, but Indian missiles could not cover
most parts of China. This Agni missile can cover all of China from any part
of India. It narrows the gap and gives us strategic parity,” he said.

The disclosure of India’s long-range missile capability comes amid growing
concern over China’s military expansion, particularly from the United
States, which wants India to become a regional counter-weight to Beijing.

But it does not reflect tension between the two regional powers. Relations
have improved significantly in the last two years with a series of
high-level visits and a sharp increase in bilateral trade.

“Trade relations and political relations are improving, but nuclear game
theory says you have to be prepared in case there is a fight with China, in
case China says ‘do this or else’, now we can choose ‘else’. It’s nuclear
diplomacy,” Mr Guruswamy added.
