India sends largest ever trade delegation to Pakistan

Mr Sharma said he now expects trade tariffs to be reduced as the countries build trust which was badly damaged following the 2008 terrorist attack on Mumbai by Pakistan-based militants.

“India is committed to taking the economic and trade relationship with Pakistan to a new level. I have come to Pakistan with an open mind and to achieve substantial progress in our talks. The talks will help us in taking forward the process of peace and trade and we will work towards deepening and diversifying the relationship,” he said after crossing into Pakistan.

The prospect of a warmer trading relationship has been met with anger by Islamic militant groups in Pakistan. Hafiz Saeed, the founder of the Lashkar e Toiba group blamed for the Mumbai attacks, said his group Jamat ud Dawa would not allow India to be given ‘Most Favoured Nation’ status.

In a speech to thousands of followers in Karachi on Sunday, he said:”India will not be a favoured nation. We will not let Pakistan become a market for India.

Pakistan is keen to import tea from India and recently voiced interest in collaboration between the two countries’ railway industries.
