India schoolchildren poisoning ‘could be deliberate’

“There have also been allegations that the cause of these death may have
been deliberate, the government education minister in Bihar is saying this
is not normal food poisoning,” he added.

The exact cause of the deaths will be known only after the post mortem
examinations and food sample tests.

District Magistrate in Chapra Abhijit Sinha said that all utensils and all the
remaining food at the school had been seized by the investigating team.

Malnutrition is one of the major health concerns among Indian children and
many state governments in India have launched midday meal programmes for
poor children.

Bihar state Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has ordered an inquiry and authorities
have suspended a food inspector and registered a case of criminal negligence
against the school headmaster.
