“The contract for the ultra-light howitzers was awarded on Friday to BAE Systems Inc.,” AFP quoted the senior defense ministry official as saying on the condition of anonymity on Saturday.
The Indian government will spend 30 billion rupees (USD 560 million) on the M777 ultralight howitzers.
The M777 is a 155-mm towed artillery gun with a firing range of up to 30 km, primarily used in mountainous areas.
India is trying to upgrade its military with hardware worth tens of billions of dollars in the face of regional rivals, China and Pakistan.
India has fought three wars with its neighbor Pakistan, which became independent in 1947; this comes while China is seen as the main focus of India’s ambitious military modernization.
In March, the country faced an embarrassment after a leaked letter revealed the weakness of its armed forces by calling New Delhi’s military hardware outdated.
New Delhi announced that the military spending for the current financial year would total 1.93 trillion rupees (USD 40 billion).
