India forces kill 4 trying to cross LOC

“Four terrorists were killed by the army in Fateh Gali area of Keran sector today, where another infiltration bid was foiled,” an army spokesman said on Saturday.

Indian troops are in constant clashes with the militants seeking independence in the area.

“We have recovered six AK-47 rifles from the slain terrorists. A search in the area is still on,” the spokesman added.

On Friday, three other militants were killed during a gunfight with security forces in Gujjar-Dur in Keran sector of frontier Kupwara district, situated some 125 kilometers northwest of Kashmir’s main city of Srinagar.

Following the gunfight, Indian army spokesman Colonel Naresh Vig issued a statement saying, “Our vigilant troops early today noticed some suspicious human movement in Gujjar-Dur area close to LoC.”

The Himalayan region has been the scene of violent demonstrations over the death of several people by the Indian army.

On September 20, violent clashes erupted in Srinagar after Indian paramilitary troops prevented hundreds of people from marching to the southern town of Shopian.

Shopian has been under curfew for two weeks, following the killing of five people in two paramilitary shootings.

Kashmir is divided between India and Pakistan by the UN-monitored Line of Control, but is claimed in full by both countries. It lies at the heart of more than 65 years of hostility between India and Pakistan.

India and Pakistan have fought four wars since their independence from Britain in 1947 – two of them over Kashmir.

Thousands of people have been killed in Kashmir over the past 20 years.
