He pulled out of a planned appearance at the Jaipur Literary Festival in
January after protests by Islamist groups, a move that was welcomed by Khan.
“The issue is not what Rushdie wrote … the issue is that nobody has the
right to inflict pain on society,” said Mr Khan, 59, days later.
Mr Rushdie took to Twitter
to vent his anger at his one time admirer.
The India Today Group said it regretted Mr. Khan’s decision.
“We do not endorse the views of any of our speakers but we do stand for
the freedom of expression in all that we do; it’s an essential principle of
a free nation and free media,” it said.
