IMF chief calls for China reforms

Speaking at a forum in Beijing on Sunday, Lagarde praised China for bringing down its current account surplus to less than 3 percent of gross domestic product from over 10 percent in 2007.

Lagarde warned that China’s external rebalancing success should not distract the country from needed internal reforms.

“Attention is now shifting toward the growing internal imbalances and, notably, the persistent and very high levels of investment,” she said.

Lagarde said that China should boost household incomes, while allocating more resources to areas such as pensions, health care and education, as the country will confront a rapidly aging population in the years ahead.

The IMF head also said the world urgently needs more financial reforms, despite improved conditions after the latest Greek debt deal.

“The world economy has stepped back from the brink and we have causes to be a little bit more optimistic,” Lagarde said.

“But optimism should not give us a sense of comfort and certainly should not lull us into a false sense of security,” she added.

The worsening eurozne’s debt crisis has forced EU governments to adopt harsh austerity measures and tough economic reforms, triggering incidents of social unrest and massive protests in many European countries.
