Perth-based internet service provider iiNet has confirmed that it has signed on with Optus Wholesale to offer long-term evolution (LTE) 4G wireless broadband services.
iiNet, which already wholesales 3G phones and mobile broadband through Optus, has signed a mobile virtual network operator agreement with Optus Wholesale to provide 4G wireless broadband services to its customers. As with the existing 3G plans, iiNet will not offer the 4G services on their own, but to existing fixed-line broadband customers.
Plans, devices, and a launch date have yet to be announced, but iiNet said it will initially offer a USB modem and a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.
“Choosing an iiNet 4G device operating on the Optus 4G network unleashes the desktop for people on the move, with faster mobile access to online files and services. It’s a substantial improvement in speeds from what is currently available on 3G,” iINet CEO Michael Malone said.
Optus is slowly catching up to Telstra with its 4G roll-out, now reaching 700 sites across the country. The company’s 4G service is currently available in Sydney, Newcastle, Perth, and Melbourne. Optus flicked on the switch for the Melbourne service on Saturday morning, and coverage extends 10km from the Melbourne CBD from east to west, Mt Waverly to St Albans, and from north to south, Campbellfield to Hampton.
