It was the image that appeared to show that David Cameron will have his work cut out in convincing the Scots not to break away.

The Prime Minister was greeted with a withering look when he visited a porridge factory on a tour of Scotland designed to drum up support for the Union.

Quaker Oats factory worker Ian McNeil’s expression was salty rather than sweet when the Conservative leader unexpectedly joined him for breakfast.

However, the proud Scot has insisted his grimace was an expression of nerves  rather than hostility.

The 53-year-old explained: ‘The photo of  me next to him is just me. I wasn’t being aggressive.

‘The pictures were taken at the beginning of the visit and nobody had even got a chance to talk so I was apprehensive.’

Mr McNeil, who has worked at the plant in Cupar, Fife, for five years, revealed that the Prime Minister soon put him at ease.

The resident of Glenrothes, a former mining hub and socialist stronghold, said: ‘Once the dialogue got going, he was really nice.’

But the prospect of voting for his new friend’s party, or supporting his campaign, is a step too far.

‘I’m not a Tory voter. He’s very nice but I won’t vote for him.

‘I’ve always been an SNP supporter and I’d love to see us get independence,’ said Mr McNeil.
