Arson: David Le Marquand, 49, set fire to three barns belonging to his brother-in-law in a bizarre attempt to stop his wife divorcing him

It was a bizarre way to try and win back the wife he had cheated on.

But when David Le Marquand’s wife walked out on him, he plotted the perfect way to show his love and commitment – by burning down three of his brother-in-law’s barns.

Against the odds, however, the incredible scheme worked, although the 49-year-old did land himself a four-year jail term.

Mr Le Marquand admitted causing three
barn fires on farms owned by his brother-in-law William Yeo, and
attempting to blackmail his long-suffering wife Christine into paying
him £210,000 by threatening more arson if she didn’t stop their divorce
proceedings.

Amazingly Mr Le
Marquand and his wife are now reconciled, and Mr Yeo has even taken the
extraordinary step of buying a property for the pair in Launceston,
Cornwall.

Mrs Le Marquand
had separated from her husband of 25 years after he told her last year
he had had an affair with a younger woman who was HIV positive.

He
left the marital home the next day and she started divorce proceedings.
Medical tests showed Mr Le Marquand had not become infected.

Mr Le Marquand, a father-of-two from Launceston, Cornwall who ran a marine transport company, told police he paid two Russian men £10,000 to start the fires.

The three barn blazes in the Launceston and Camelford areas of Cornwall caused £300,000 damage to his brother-in-law’s properties.

In a ‘staggering’ act of charity, however, Mrs Le Marquand agreed to rebuild the couple’s relationship and they are now reconciled.

Defence counsel Rupert Taylor told Truro Crown Court: ‘It is a staggering attempt by the family to rebuild their relationship.

‘Mrs Le Marquand has taken the most charitable and Christian approach to the situation one could imagine’.

The court heard Mr Le Marquand claimed that William Yeo always resented him because he was not a farmer, asserting that farms had been given to other members of the family but not to Christine.

Jailing Mr Lr Marquand for four years, Judge Christopher Harvey Clark QC emphasised that the sentence should not be seen as a punishment on Mrs Le Marquand but he had to reflect the public outrage at the burning down of three substantial country barns.

Mr Taylor said that it was Mrs Le Marquand’s belief that her husband had suffered a breakdown through stress and the failure of his yacht haulage business and it was also her view that when she married she had married for life.

What a bunch of fruit loops!

What a fine outpouring of Christian benevolence…but then remember, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned..so watch this space

……… families eh!!

He paid £10,000 for somebody else to do the job… and he still got caught. Waste of money, should have just done it himself.

I hope Christine finds the strength to leave this monster and doesn’t end up as another dead spouse.

I believe it is called Stockholm syndrome…I know because my sister in law did more or less the same, taking back her lying, deceiving, terrorizing and completely untrustworthy husband of 35+ years…
Needless to say, guys like him and my brother in law can cause a huge amount of damage within the family…

Couldn’t make it up!

…… is this the Daily Sport ?

She did not give-in ‘in spite of the arson attacks’ – she succumbed to his threats, whcih is something totally different! He did, after all, threaten to continue if she did not stop the divorce proceedings. There is nothing amazing about this – someone too frightened to stand her ground has given-in to the bullying. Let’s face it, it’s not as if our Police force would be willing to protect her in any way – they never do – so she didn’t have much choice.

Like giving in to a nasty spoilt brat.
