Some Twitter users reacted to footballer Jamie Vardy breaking an LGBT corner flag after he scored a last minute winner in a game by accusing the Leicester City striker of being “homophobic.”
After Vardy hit the back of the net, he ran to the corner and demolished the stand holding up the rainbow-colored flag, which is currently being displayed at grounds throughout the UK in yet another virtue signaling measure.

Many Twitter users reacted by claiming the incident was an attack on gay people.
I may be reading a bit much into this, but Vardy has never done this to a normal corner flag. As soon as it is a corner flag supporting gay pride, he destroys it.
Sends out a horrible message. I’m furious. pic.twitter.com/6ltMScHruf— FauxniqueJenkins (@FauxniqueJ) December 6, 2020
disgusting behaviour from Vardy to show his feelings towards the LGBTQ community, kicking their flag down.
kick homophobic people like him out of the game 😡 https://t.co/nAl4qjaH66

And by your Carless Act of smashing up the flag you are now seen as an advocate of homophobic abuse, never have I seen so much homophobic hate online from one individual act of carelessness. Well done Vardy! 👏🏻it’s LGBT campaign in football and you portrayed yourself ani 🏳️🌈 https://t.co/2p5YhZfRy6

Any reason why you smashed a corner flag with Gay Pride on it? You dont do it when it has BLM on it but you do it as soon as its Gay Pride! Care to explain?
— Jamie Lynch (@JamieTLynch) December 6, 2020
I’m surprised I haven’t seen takes of Vardy kicking down the corner flag as homophobic tbh.
The was a rainbow flag. A very homophobic thing to do.
— Voldemort Emeritus (@shey_drogo) December 7, 2020
What was with the homophobic attack on the corner flag though 🤔
— Mouth11 (@Mouth1112) December 6, 2020
Amazed to see that Gary Lineker has liked this tweet and all the homophobic traffic that it has attracted… is Vardy a homophobe or was it just a goal celebration?
— paulsheriff (@paulsheriff6) December 6, 2020
I’m so happy leicester are in the lead but Jamie Vardy breaking the corner flag while it’s rainbow feels vaguely homophobic
— melo (@qweenmess) December 6, 2020
jamie vardy gave me the homophobic vibe, idk just my feeling
— god’s beloved sinner™️ / Echa (@raissajshdq) December 7, 2020
I honestly don’t think Vardy gave it any thought, but people who hate us seem pretty happy that he did it.
It’s not reading too much into it, and it’s incredibly insulting to suggest as much. pic.twitter.com/KHOG4iZ12V

Numerous others responded by pointing out that Vardy was particularly excited because he had scored a last minute winner against the team he hates the most, Sheffield Utd, given that he is a fan of rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
You’re not just reading a bit much into this, you’re reading wayyyy too much into this. He’s kicked, slapped and punched corner flags before with goal celebrations. And today he’d just scored a last minute winner against the bitter rivals of his boyhood team. Hope that helps. https://t.co/89eMU2L8GR
— Mr Geoff Peters (@mrgeoffpeters) December 6, 2020
people are saying vardy shattered the corner flag because he’s homophobic? he did it because he beat his boyhood teams rivals and scored a late winner?
— KeYuN (@Joober15) December 7, 2020
Vardy is apparently homophobic now cuz he broke a corner flag let’s just not say anything about this… pic.twitter.com/d6MLxMjLH7

Others suggested that Vardy should make some kind of apology even if he didn’t intend to disparage LGBT people.
Yeah Vardy certainly didn’t intend anything, however I do hope there’s a statement released from him condemning the homophobic tweets surrounding this picture from fans. We’ve really seen the ugly side of the beautiful game come out in full force.
— Callum 🐸 Calzum (@CalzumSSBM) December 7, 2020
Vardy is not homophobic (to my knowledge) but I think he needs to say something just to shut up the actual homophobes praising him for something he didn’t do

Meanwhile, after some fans were allowed into stadiums for the first time, players taking a knee to honor Black Lives Matter before the game kicked off was booed by some Millwall supporters.

Both clubs immediately prostrated themselves and apologized despite the obvious fact that the fans were booing a violent, far-left political movement (BLM) and were not booing black people.
