Hundreds of St George evacuees at Dalby

More than 300 St George residents and a menagerie of domestic pets are being cared for at two evacuation centres at Dalby in southern Queensland.

Western Downs mayor Ray Brown says the two centres in Dalby, 300km northeast of St George, are expecting more people to arrive in the next day or two.

Bedding has been brought in and it could be the weekend before some St George residents will be able to return home, he told AAP.

“Some people do not know when they are going back – that’s an unknown,” Mr Brown said.

“The main thing is to keep people comfortable.

“Everyone is digging into help and we even have a truck from the RSPCA looking after animals.

“It’s a bit of a hassle from time to time but it keeps things lively and keeps everyone happy.”

Mr Brown said some residents were being housed at smaller evacuation centres in nearby towns but would likely make their way to Dalby.

“Those people may come through because it’s going to be a fair length of stay before they are allowed back into St George,” Mr Brown said.

If evacuee numbers exceeded 500 then the council would need to provide professional catering.

“We can take a thousand, we have enough bedding for that, but a lot of people have self-evacuated and got to family and friends so that’s helped,” the mayor said.

About 20 people remain at the evacuation centre at Brisbane’s RNA showgrounds, half the number that spent Sunday evening there.

Brisbane mayor Graham Quirk says the showgrounds centre can easily hold more than a 1000 evacuees.

“We’ve got bedding for around 300 as a starting point and we can whip that up to more numbers if required,” he told ABC Radio.
