According to the document, which was released on Tuesday following a Freedom of Information request, many of the incidents alleged to have occurred at the BBC were not passed to police and were closed with the remark “no further action.”
Figures going back to 2009 showed that thefts of items, including televisions, radios and mobile phones, were endemic at the BBC.
The dossier also included an instance of one employee being accused of having under-age sex while on an assignment. However, it was found that the member of staff was let off only with a warning because the allegation could not be proved.
“It is deeply worrying that criminal behaviour is occurring inside the BBC which is often not being properly investigated and therefore going unpunished,” said Matthew Sinclair of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, Britain’s independent grassroots campaign for lower taxes.
The revelations follow the Jimmy Savile scandal, which saw the broadcaster accused of turning a blind eye to claims of sex abuse against former TV host.
Earlier in January, in a report by the police and the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC), Savile was branded as one of the UK’s most prolific known sexual predators who used his celebrity status to “hide in plain sight.”
According to the report titled “Giving Victims a Voice,” Some 214 crimes, including 34 of rape or penetration during 54 years of abuse committed by the presenter, were recorded across 28 police force areas.
