Hugo Chavez surgery ‘successful’

Without naming his sources, he said that at least one Brazilian doctor was on
the medical team treating President Chavez and that the test results were
being analysed by a doctor in Moscow.

The team of medics were considering “the best way to proceed in this case,
which appears to be more complicated than they initially thought,” Mr
Periera wrote.

On February 21, the 57-year-old socialist leader announced that he had
developed “a small lesion” on the same pelvic area were a cancerous tumour
was removed last June.

Mr Periera had reported days before that an announcement would be forthcoming
after sources told him the cancer had spread.

Chavez had declared himself cancer-free last October after a course of
chemotherapy and before leaving for Havana on Friday, he insisted: “I will
live! I will live!”.

WikiLeaks documents that were published on Monday revealed that doctors from
across the globe and been consulted over the illness and were at odds over
his prognosis.

According to confidential emails stolen from Stratfor analytical firm, Russian
doctors blamed Cuban medics for botching the first surgery and that the
cancer had spread from the prostrate, to the colon, lymph-nodes and bone
marrow.

The report, dating from December 2011, described how the Cuban team gave
President Chavez two years to live, while the Russians believed he would be
dead within the year.
