The Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich line up is rounding out with HTC’s latest smartphone releases, the much anticipated HTC One S and One X. They’ve been dubbed the new superphones from HTC, which is struggling to regain the spotlight given the heavy competition from Samsung, Motorola and others. LG’s building out Sprint’s LTE lineup as well, with the Viper 4G expected to hit stores in the next two weeks. Here’s this week’s top Android devices.
HTC One X
HTC’s hit the refresh button with the HTC One X, rebooting its position in a crowded Android device market. From the company’s image to its hardware, the One X represents a new start for HTC, complete with Android’s latest OS version and plenty else to drool over. Considered the most important release since HTC’s Evo 4G, the One X boasts Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, a powerful 1.5GHz quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and a 4.7-inch 720p display. The 8-megapixel camera and 32GB of storage are expected for a device with this much hype, and its extended battery life. HTC also pulled out all the stops for its software integration, including Imagesense for an optimized camera experience. Hitting the market in the UK this week, the HTC One X is likely to boast slightly different specs and appearance when it arrives in the U.S. for Sprint as the EVO 4G LTE.
HTC One S
Second in command to the HTC One X is the One S, a less powerful but still notable release from the Android OEM. Also running Android 4.0 ICS, the One S boasts a 4.3-inch display and an ultra-thin profile at just 7.8mm thick. There’s a 1.5GHz processor under the hood, though its dual-core chip is less powerful than the One X’s quad-core. As with the One X, HTC’s Sense software is well-integrated, indicating a great deal of effort for the ICS smartphone. The 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display is marginally less bright than the One X with a lower resolution at 540×960 pixels. The camera, however, matches the One X at 8-megapixels, though there are other slight variations with the One S, like no in-built NFC chip. Smaller than the One X with only 16GB of internal storage, the One S also loses the benefit of expanded space, as there’s no microSD card slot. But the One S does come with 25GB of cloud storage via Dropbox. The HTC One S is expected to come to the U.S. via T-Mobile. No price details just yet.
LG Viper 4G LTE
Thanks to Sprint, we have a few new details on the upcoming LG Viper, one of the latest 4G LTE smartphones from Android’s camp. It comes with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB or RAM, a 4-inch WGVA display and an NFC chip pre-installed. The rear-camera comes in at just 5-megapixels, and while the Viper ships with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, an ICS update is expected in the future. LG’s latest is eco-friendly with uLE Platinum certification, recycled plastic casing and an energy-efficient charger. The Viper is also moderately priced at $99 (with a two-year contract and a $50 mail-in rebate that comes in the form of an American Express Prepaid Reward Card). With no solid release date yet, but the pre-orders will commence on April 12.
