Howard’s OM a ‘compliment to Australia’

Former prime minister John Howard says his appointment by the Queen to the Order of Merit is a compliment to Australia.

Mr Howard says he felt surprised and honoured when the Queen’s private secretary phoned to ask if he would accept the appointment.

The honour is bestowed upon individuals who achieve “exceptional distinction in the arts, learning, sciences and other areas such as public service”, the Royal Family’s website said in its announcement on Sunday.

“It’s obviously something that gives me a great deal of pleasure and surprise,” Mr Howard told ABC radio on Monday.

“I also see it as a compliment to Australia and a reminder of the great respect the Queen has for our country and the continued interest that she displays in the welfare of Australia and Australians.”

Appointments to the Order are made by the monarch and do not require government input.

The Order is restricted to 24 members and occasional foreign recipients.
