House destroyed by fire started by child playing with matches

A fire which destroyed a home in Casuarina this morning was started by a young child playing with matches.

Fire crews were called to the brick and tile home on Nicholas Drive at about 6.40am.

A Fire and Emergency Services Authority spokesman said two adults and three children were occupying the five bedroom house at the time.

They were alerted to the fire by smoke detectors and fled the home.

A 23-year-old woman and three month old baby had to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The smoke caused $350,000 damage, including $50,000 worth of contents which were not insured.

The FESA spokesman said it was believed the fire was started by a child playing with matches in a bunk-bed.

Firefighters from three stations attended a separate fire in Heathridge at 6.50am, which caused $200,000 damage.

A FESA spokesman said the house was completely engulfed by flames by the time firefighters arrived at the scene.

The elderly male occupant evacuated to a neighbour’s house.

Fire investigators are at the scene, and it is understood the fire may have been started by a cigarette.

There is extensive damage to the house.
