A trained hostage negotiator who led the operation to help NZ authorities after last year’s Christchurch earthquake will head the newly established NSW transport police.
Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione announced on Tuesday that Max Mitchell had been confirmed as new assistant commissioner in charge of the Police Transport Command.
Assistant Commissioner Mitchell, who was transferred to the command last month after it was introduced, was previously in charge of the Newcastle Local Area Command and led a team of 130 NSW police during Operation Monro in the aftermath of the Christchurch quake.
The Police Transport Command was introduced to increase public safety on trains, buses and ferries.
The 300 officer command is due to double by December 2014.
It will focus on transport hubs in central, south-western and north-western Sydney as well as the Hunter, Central Coast and Illawarra regions.
