Nile News, a state-owned news channel, said Mubarak suffered a heart attack.
Mubarak’s lawyers said that they would appeal against the sentence.
But some criticised the court, on the outskirts of Cairo, for being too
lenient. Mubarak’s two sons Gamal and Alaa both had the charges against them
dropped.
Inside the courtroom, fights broke out when the verdict was announced, while
on the streets of Cairo there was anger among some that Mubarak did not
receive the death penalty.
The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood’s presidential candidate denounced the
verdicts as a “farce” and demanded a retrial, in a statement on
Twitter.
“Dr Mohammed Mursi, the presidential candidate, describes the verdict as
‘a farce’ and demands a retrial with the necessary evidence for a just
punishment,” the Brotherhood said on its official Twitter account.
The Muslim Brotherhood called for a mass protest against the verdict.
