Hope for Bald People; A New Dark Matter Theory

Discovered: A hair regeneration technique using stem cells, a brand new dark matter theory, brain scans can predict future weight gain and future sex and another reason to drink.

  • A hair regeneration technique. Get excited, baldies. Using adult stem cells, researchers successfully performed functional hair regeneration. “Their bioengineered follicles showed restored hair cycles and piloerection through the rearrangement of follicular stem cells and their niches,” explains the research write-up. “The bioengineered hair follicle also developed the correct structures and formed proper connections with surrounding host tissues such as the epidermis, arrector pili muscle and nerve fibers,” it continued. The research was conducted as a step toward organ replacement regenerative therapies But, it also gives hope to the balding among us. [SEA]
  • A new, completely different dark matter theory. Until today, space thinkers believed that the area around the sun was mostly dark matter. But after doing a little digging around, new space thinkers don’t think that’s so true. “The amount of mass that we derive matches very well with what we see — stars, dust and gas — in the region around the Sun,” explains researcher Christian Moni Bidin. “But this leaves no room for the extra material — dark matter — that we were expecting. Our calculations show that it should have shown up very clearly in our measurements. But it was just not there!” Freaky, because the old dark matter theory explained the speed of rotation of the Milky Way. “Despite the new results, the Milky Way certainly rotates much faster than the visible matter alone can account for. So, if dark matter is not present where we expected it, a new solution for the missing mass problem must be found,” adds Moni Bidin. Any ideas? [ESO]
  • Brain scans can predict future weight gain and sexual activity. Speaking of inexplicable, how does our mind now know what we’re going to do later. Science explains: “The people whose brains responded more strongly to food cues were the people who went on to gain more weight six months later,” says researcher Kathryn Demos. “And, the sex? Just as cue reactivity to food images was investigated as potential predictors of weight gain, cue reactivity to sexual images was used to predict sexual desire,” she continues. Sounds like magic. [Dartmouth]
  • Another reason to drink. Love this kind of research. Love. it. Drinking in moderation both before and after a heart attack is associated with lower mortality. Bam: sanctioned drinking. Moderate, at least in this study, equals between 2 and 3 drinks, by the way, which led to a 22 percent reduction in mortality. Though, this theory only works for moderate drinking. Once the drinking went beyond three drinks a day, all benefit was gone. [HPFS]
