Home invaders kill Brisbane man

Two intruders have shot a man dead and maimed his dog in a chilling home invasion witnessed by the victim’s teenage daughter.

Police say it will take days to complete a forensic examination of the home at Rochedale South, south of Brisbane, and are yet to establish a motive for the murder.

The 56-year-old died from multiple gunshot wounds despite the efforts of paramedics. His dog survived and has undergone surgery to remove a bullet.

The victim’s 19-year-old daughter, who was home when the attack happened, made a frantic emergency call for help about 11pm (AEST) on Wednesday.

She was not hurt and is helping police piece together what happened.

Detectives and officers from the homicide and serious and violent crime squads are working on the case, and a major incident room has been set up at Logan police station.

Detective Inspector Chris Jory told AAP a post-mortem examination would determine how many times the man was shot.

A number of empty shell casings from a handgun have been found at the scene.

Det Insp Jory said it was too early to speculate about a motive for the attack, and would not comment on whether the murdered man was known to police.

He said there were no signs of drugs at the home and the victim was not a member of an outlaw motorcycle gang.

“He and the family form part of the investigation but it’s too early for us to make any links at all to whether he was known to police or not,” he told AAP.

He said the family dog, a Rottweiler cross, was shot, possibly because it had become agitated by the presence of the intruders.

The animal was taken to a local veterinary surgery where a bullet was removed.

Det Insp Jory said the crime scene investigation could take several days.

“It’s a large house, the crime scene is quite complex and the investigation is in its infancy.”

Neighbour Marjorie Richardson said the murdered man was friendly and had lived in the area for more than 20 years.

“He would bring my bin in from the street from time to time and I’d do the same for him,” she told The Courier-Mail.

“He was a lovely man and we always got along well. It’s very upsetting.”

Ms Richardson said she heard the man’s dog barking but didn’t hear gunshots.
