Laga’aia, who is from New Zealand and spent 18 months performing in Home and
Away, praised Dirani’s calls for greater on-screen diversity.
“Hats off to you Firass Dirani, for a call to stop commercial network
producers casting only white actors. Only on Australian screens. Shame!”
he tweeted.
He continued saying commercial TV should emulate children’s TV in Australia.
“We are a rainbow nation in kids TV. No tokens here.”
The show’s producer, Channel 7, denied Laga’aia’s claims of racism, saying his
contract ended because his character’s storyline “reached a natural
conclusion”.
“Jay’s comments are offensive,” a spokesman said.
“We have great regard for Jay and his work on Home and Away during the
last two years. It is insulting to suggest that Home and Away is racist. His
character’s storyline reached a natural conclusion.”
