Gary Wilson, 51, was jailed for four years last week after admitting putting his young neighbour Hollie Townsley through a six year campaign of obscene and frightening text messages

A young woman who was tormented for six years by a phone text stalker has spoken of her shock when she discovered it was her neighbour.

Hollie Townsley, 21, was sent thousands of anonymous obscene messages and phone calls, which started when she was only 14.

Miss Townsley, who became too frightened to leave the house, was unaware that her stalker was neighbour Gary Wilson, who she had known for most of her life.

Wilson, 51, was jailed for four years at Newcastle Crown Court last week after admitting putting Hollie in fear of violence by harassment.

The court heard that Wilson believed his neighbours resented his successful bid to build a conservatory.

He began bombarding the teenager with messages, starting with a text saying ‘I know what what you’re wearing’, which Hollie believed was a joke by a friend at school.

But things quickly escalated, and it became clear she was being followed as the texter knew what she was doing and where she was at all times.

Miss Townsley repeatedly changed her number, but Wilson managed to trace her while keeping his identity a secret.

Miss Townsley, from Ashington, Northumberland, said: ‘The person sending them knew where I was, what I was wearing and who I was with.

‘The person sending the texts must have been following me. One time, I was over the other side of Ashington after school and he knew where I was, and what I was wearing.

‘I didn’t tell my parents at that point but then the messages started mentioning rape and they turned very graphic.

‘A lot of the messages were sexual. He started texting that he was going to attack and rape me when I least expected it.

‘It was then that I told my parents. I was only 15 and I didn’t even understand some of the things written in the texts.

‘I was too embarrassed to read them out, so I gave the phone to my dad to read them. After that, the phone calls started as well.

‘If he rang my mobile, he would talk in a disguised voice and if he rang the
house phone, he wouldn’t speak.’

She added: ‘I must have changed my number five or so times and, after a few months, he would always get hold of the new number.

‘It was soon after the rape texts started that we knew we had to go to the police.’

Wilson’s texts became increasingly frequent and frightening, and Miss Townsley would even receive a message saying ‘Night, night’ when she turned her bedroom light off.

Wilson also recorded secret video footage of her from a bedroom window.

But despite attempts to find him, Wilson, of Bywell Road, Ashington,
Northumberland, managed to keep his identity a secret.

Miss Townsley said: ‘The worst thing was just not knowing who it was.

‘I spent ages going over and over who might have had a grudge against me. I never had any reason to suspect Gary.

‘I’ve lived here all of my life and Gary and his wife had been my neighbours
all that time. We didn’t know them well but you’d say hello if you saw them or wave at them.

‘He’d have known me since I was a baby. I just can’t think of any reason he would have for doing what he did.

‘It’s not like we had fallen out with him or there were any issues. I was a kid and I’d grown up next door to him.’

It was only when Wilson posed as a young girl on a teenagers’ chat-site that the truth emerged.

He was posing as a 15-year-old girl and was using a photograph of Miss Townsley as his picture ID.

When police visited his house to arrest him for that offence, telephones were seized which were positively linked to the messages sent to Miss Townsley.

the sentence is a joke.

Blame Frank……..

Why should she have changed her phones as so many ridiculous comments suggest, she was a teenage girl probably half frightened out of her mind by a seriously messed up older man. He was a neighbour they trusted-maybe he asked around for her number who knows? The fact is even if her number was written on the side of her bloody house it was in no way her fault and we have every right to live how we wish free from harassment.

Disgusting man. He should have been given a longer jail term

What’s more worrying is that police officers clearly didn’t take his antics seriously enough to bother finding him and infact only caught him on a totally unrelated matter by fluke.

This disgusting toe-rag should have a harsher punishment. Not only has he destroyed seven years of a young girl’s life but he has contributed to the erosion of trust between everyone in society towards everyone else. Through his behaviour every woman is entitled to have become more suspicious of every man and even those men closest to her. It’s very sad. Cave men would have torn him apart but I guess we are not cave men any more so we should just lock him up for a very very long time. Four years means two years at most with “good behaviour” and possibly even less. Sad.

First of all I must say how sorry I feel for Hollie Townsley and what a horrendous experience it must have been. I am very glad this man has now been punished
Having said that, some of this story just doesn’t make sense.
It says Hollie changed her number repeatedly. But if she was getting malicious, calls, would it not make sense to not only restrict who had this number, but make a note of who had it.
Then, if they gave the no. to the guy next door, and the trouble started again. Simple logic would show who was responsible.
Secondly if the perpertrator was obviously able to observe Hollie on a regular basis, this must have restricted the possible suspects to a very few people.
Finally, since it was all so very distressing, why not contact the police much earlier? If this had happened to my daughter I would have pestered the police until something was done about it.

this might be more common than we realise. my mum remembers an old lady who lived near to us receiving phonecalls the same time every night. when she picked up the phone all she heard was a man laughing. this went on for years until a neighbour died and the phone calls stopped.

And he claimed this was about his successful bid to build a conservatory!
Not about him being a perverted freak, then?

The police could have tracked this idiot long ago .
