HIV scare: sex worker charged on disease counts

A male prostitute who operated in Melbourne’s northern suburbs may have infected dozens of clients with HIV, police say.

Police arrested a 36-year-old man in Reservoir about 2.30pm yesterday after an investigation into alleged sexual services being offered from a house.

Detectives from the Epping sexual offences and child abuse investigation team last night charged the Reservoir man with attempting to intentionally infect another person with a serious disease.

He was also charged with conduct endangering life and working as a sex worker working while infected with disease. The services had been advertised in gay publications.

The man faced and out-of-sessions court hearing last night and was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court today.

Sergeant Glen Wilson of Epping police said it was unclear how many men may have been infected with HIV by the sex worker.

Police urged anyone who may have used the man’s services to come forward and assured them they would be dealt with confidentially.
