Hackers operating from China are said to have hacked the e-mail accounts of different prominent members of the European Union on four different occasions. One of the victims is the president of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy. American intelligence services discovered that something was wrong.
The hackers operate under the name “Byzantine Candor” or “Comment Group”. A group of 30 American security specialists was following the hackers for several months and used computer logbooks to prove the hackings, which took place last year in July.
It turns out that the hackers were able to penetrate the network of the European Council on 8, 11, 13 and 18 July, each time around 9 a.m. CET. They hacked a total of 17 mail accounts. Experts believe that it allowed them to have access to the mails for a period of one week each time. They could read Herman Van Rompuy’s personal e-mails and also download documents attached to the mails.
Security specialists say that they “impressed” by the hackers. They also hacked the American oil concern Halliburton and the Indian group ITC among others. It is believed that the hackers operate from China.
