One of the candidates in the French presidential race has lifted the lid on thinking in Paris with regard to European Council President, Belgium’s Herman Van Rompuy.

François Bayrou of the centrist MoDem party told the daily Le Monde that Mr Van Rompuy had been given a second term ‘because of his weak personality’.
The French presidential contender claims that only one percent of Europeans would know who we were talking about if they were quizzed about the European Council President:
“That’s the reason why he was chosen, so as not to put M Sarkozy or Mme Merkel in the shade.”
M Bayrou favours direct elections for a European President. At present the European Council President is elected by the 27 heads of state and government.
Mr Van Rompuy was recently re-elected for a second non-renewable term that expires at the end of November 2014.
