Heavy rainfall again floods Mildura properties

An emergency incident control centre was set up in Mildura at the weekend to respond to the rainfall.

SES Unit Controller Michael Hellwege says about eighty calls for help were received between 6:45 am and 11:30am on Sunday morning.

Mr Hellwege says the majority of calls came from Mildura and Irymple with several from Merbein also.

He says volunteers responded to reports of water in homes and also one case of a collapsed roof due to water in the ceiling.

Mr Hellwege says police helped with several road blocks, including where water pooled badly on the road at Plain Tree Drive.

“I think there are a lot of people who are still a bit nervous about the heavy rains that we have had and as a result of February and they have good reason to be concerned about the amount of water because a lot of this rain did fall in a fairly short period of time.”

Seventh Street shop owners, between Etiwanda and Benetook Avenue were again inundated by the rainfall.

Shop owner Ian Morris said the amount of water to come through his store was about half that of the record flooding which came through earlier in the year.

“We had probably seven inches come through, front to back of the store – so the entire warehouse was flooded out.”

Me Morris said an amount of his stock was also flooded.

“It’s just disheartening,” he said “it’s not even twelve months and we’ve got to go through and clean up the whole store.”

“We’ve only just had new cupboards and so forth installed, you know…since February.”
