Heavy rain hits Qld’s north, central west

Unseasonable downpours have hit north and central west Queensland, sparking flood warnings, as the Townsville region recorded its wettest July day in more than 60 years.

Since 9am (AEST) on Monday, the region has had between 80 and 100 millimetres of rain – well beyond the previous July record of 51mm in a day set in 1950, the ABC reported.

The Bureau of Meteorology on Tuesday issued a flood warning for coastal rivers and creeks from Innisfail to Ayr, in the state’s north.

“Overnight rainfall totals in excess of 100mm have caused river and creek rises throughout the warning area,” the bureau said.

“Rainfall is forecast to continue this morning with further heavy falls expected. Fast river and creek rises are likely in the areas of heaviest falls.”

Senior bureau forecaster Bill O’Connor told the ABC the Cairns area had also seen heavy falls of up to 50mm.

And there have been good falls across grazing land in the state’s central west, with Longreach recording 58mm, Blackall 29mm and Winton 26mm.
