The State Emergency Service has responded to more than 550 calls for assistance after heavy rain and winds lashed Victoria on Friday.

Winds of up to 100 kilometres per hour have been recorded at the southern end of Port Phillip as Melbourne experienced its wettest May day since 1995.

Upper Lang Lang received 57 millimetres, Yarragon 50 and Monbulk 49 millimetres of rain.

Epping and Clayton both received 38 millimetres.

The Weather Bureau’s Dean Sgarbossa says strong wind gusts will continue through the night.

“The strong winds will persist for much of this evening in the Melbourne area and into tomorrow morning,” he said.

“The strongest winds are now focused over the Mornington Peninsula and entering into southern Gippsland, where we are expecting wind gusts of up to 100 kilometres an hour.”
