Queensland’s health minister is about to front angry nurses over his government’s plan to claw back overpayments by docking their pay.
The Queensland Nurses Union (QNU)says Lawrence Springborg will attend its annual conference on Friday morning, amid demands he abandon plans to dock the wages of overpaid nurses.
Mr Springborg on Wednesday introduced laws to parliament that will allow the state to deduct future overpayments, with consultation.
The move – sparked by the bungled rollout of a flawed Queensland Health payroll system – has sparked a furious response from the QNU.
Union secretary Beth Mohle says that while the previous Labor government created the problem, the new Liberal National Party government is putting workers’ rights in jeopardy.
The public service union, Together, has also condemned the government for attacking the rights of payroll victims.
Mr Springborg has promised to minimise the inconvenience for affected staff.
But he said there must be a system to start automatically recovering overpayments.
The flawed payroll system has underpaid, overpaid or not paid thousands of staff since 2010, costing the state more than $90 million.
