Heal the Bay Identifies Worst Beaches in Southern California

Heal the Bay terms a polluted beach as a “Beach Bummer.” The latest samples show that seven out of California’s 10 most polluted beaches are in Los Angeles County.

Which beaches are most polluted?

In Los Angeles County, there are Avalon Harbor Beach on Catalina Island; Puerco Beach, Surfrider Beach, Escondido Beach and Solstice Canyon Beach in Malibu; Cabrillo Beach in San Pedro; and Topanga State Beach. Orange County is home to Poche Beach and Doheny State Beach in Dana Point. Santa Cruz County features Cowell Beach in Santa Cruz. Note that the organization identifies specific on-beach locations where samples register as polluted; it is possible for beach quality to vary away from storm drains.

Which beaches have excellent water quality year-round?

In San Diego County, there are St. Malo Beach in Oceanside; various projections in Carlsbad, Ocean Beach, Sunset Cliffs, Point Loma, Coronado and Encinitas; the Cardiff State Beach; and San Dieguito River Beach in Del Mar. Orange County may brag over Seal Beach, Surfside Beach, Sunset Beach, Newport Beach, and various projections. Los Angeles County has four beaches of note: Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo, El Matador State Beach in Encinal Canyon, Las Flores State Beach at Las Flores Creek, and various points around the Palos Verdes Peninsula. In Ventura County, there are Rincon Beach, Oil Piers Beach, Faria County Park, Solimar Beach, Emma Wood State Beach, Surfers Point and Silverstrand. San Luis Obispo County features Cayucos State Beach, Morro Strand State Beach and Pismo State Beach. Sharp Park Beach, Rockaway Beach, and Montara State Beach in San Mateo County rank high, as does Dunes Beach. In San Francisco County, there are Baker Beach West and Ocean Beach.

Who else rates California beaches?

Dr. Beach offers annual listings of the best beaches nationwide. This year, the top billing went to Coronado Beach in San Diego. Billed as “America’s foremost beach expert,” Dr. Beach is actually a professor at Florida International University and his beach listings are scientifically backed.

What problems affect Southern California beach quality?

Heal the Bay notes that rainy season runoff is polluted and introduces bacteria into the oceans. Cities have instituted methods to divert some of the runoff into sewer lines and send it to treatment plants. Other problems include accidental sewage spills. Case in the point is the May 15 Long Beach sewage spill warning. The OC Register noted, “5,500 gallons of sewage spilled in the Arroyo Seco area,” which led to beach closures.

Why should beachgoers pay attention to the ratings?

Beaches that have poor ratings present health risks to those playing in the sand or in the water. “A poor grade means beachgoers face a higher risk of contracting illnesses such as stomach flu, ear infections, upper respiratory infections and skin rashes than swimmers at cleaner beaches,” Heal the Bay notes. While the organization admits that swimming at a beach with a D or F grade will not automatically result in illness, it does purport that one in 25 beachgoers will indeed suffer ill effects from the exposure to bacteria.
