POLICE have neither confirmed nor denied they found the headless body of a man in his Broadwater home on Thursday.
But a Sydney newspaper has reported on its website that the 54-year-old man was found decapitated in the kitchen of his River St home and, in a strange twist to the story, a hat was placed on the corpse where his head should have been.
Police arrived at the home at about 4.30pm on Thursday and established a crime scene at the house.
A friend of the man had called police because they were concerned he hadn’t been seen or heard from for several days.
When asked point blank about the rumour of a headless body being discovered inside the house, Richmond Local Area Command duty officer inspector Matt Kehoe refused to confirm or deny it.
“The incident is being treated as suspicious,” was all Inspector Kehoe said.
Police from the forensic services group and officers from the Richmond Operational Support Group were assisting detectives from the Richmond Local Area Command.
The man’s next door neighbour said until Thursday afternoon, she had never before seen a police car on the quiet street.
“We are a bit shocked. Things like that happening in the neighbourhood aren’t nice,” she said.
The neighbour said the man usually kept to himself.
Insp Kehoe said police were yet to formally identify the body. It was believed the man’s head had not yet been found.
