‘Misunderstood’: The Tottenham Hotspur boss said he was ‘sick and tired’ of slurs, as his trial over Premier League bung allegations continued today
Harry Redknapp told football bung
investigators ‘there is nothing on me in this world’ and claimed he had
been victimised because of his cockney accent, a court heard today.
The
Tottenham manager said he was ‘sick and tired’ of the slurs, Southwark
Crown Court learned, as a taped conversation between him and an official
from the Quest inquiry was played today.
The
64-year-old former Portsmouth boss and his then-chairman Milan Mandaric
are accused of cheating the public revenue over two transfer payments
to a Monaco bank account — one for £93,100, the second for £96,300.
Both deny the charges.
In
an interview with Quest managing director Nigel Layton in 2006,
Redknapp said: ‘A friend said to me, he said “Harry, I can’t believe
it’s always you, I have dealt with you enough times.
‘Your problem is
your name, Harry, and you have got a cockney accent.”
‘People don’t know me and I am sick and tired of it. There ain’t nobody who is more of a fan.
‘If there is any mud to be thrown, I seem to get on the end of it for whatever reason.’
The
transcripts were read to the court by Redknapp’s lawyer John Kelsey-Fry
QC.
Mr Layton and other officials from Quest met Redknapp several times
after first talking to Portsmouth executives, including Mandaric and
then-chief executive Peter Storrie, in May 2006.

Under
cross-examination Mr Layton said the manager was ‘forthcoming’ in
telling the inquiry about his Monaco account during the inquiry by
former Met police commissioner Lord Stevens in 2006.
But
prosecutor John Black QC said Redknapp’s excuses for his £180,000
offshore windfall were ‘contradictory, inconsistent and lack
credibility’.
Mr Black completed his opening speech by pointing out how Redknapp’s story differed from co-defendant Mandaric’s.
The
court was also played taped recordings of conversations between News of
the World journalist Rob Beasley and Mandaric in which the chairman
said the payments into the Monaco account had ‘nothing to with football’
and were part of a ‘business investment’.

That
claim was contradicted by Redknapp only days later when he told the
same reporter the money was a transfer bonus linked to the sale of Peter
Crouch from Portsmouth to Aston Villa, the court heard.
Jurors were asked to consider how the Tottenham manager ‘simply laughed’ when questioned about the Monaco ‘bung’.
‘Those
explanations, the Crown say, are contradictory, inconsistent and lack
credibility,’ said Mr Black said. ‘At the heart of the Crown’s case is
the fact that no tax was paid.’
The trial continues.
