Ever wish your iPhone could transform into a desktop phone? A new speaker from Invoxia turns mobile devices into a landline, making conference and video calls more user-friendly for businesses.
Called the AudiOffice — which features a dock equipped with speakers for devices such as the iPhone, iPod and iPad — the system was unveiled at the Mobile World Congress conference in February, but it starts shipping this week.
What’s innovative about the AudiOffice is that it offers many functions, so users aren’t confined to just using it for one purpose. It plays music, makes calls and allows users to video chat with others. Thanks to apps such as Skype and FaceTime that allow businesses to communicate with others via the video chat and cut down on communication costs, the unit also takes being tied to a traditional computer out of the equation.
But will the device be enticing enough for small businesses to make the switch from landlines? With a hefty price tag of $299 each, it’s unlikely businesses will be ordering one for each worker. But the AudiOffice’s strong audio quality and overall concept execution will be appealing to organizations looking to innovate and streamline their conference call experience.

The set-up process is simple. After assembling the unit in a few quick steps, users must download the free Invoxia app from the Apple App Store. Meanwhile, the iPhone sits comfortably in the speaker set. Users then activate Bluetooth on the mobile device and update the app’s settings (this process took us about 10 minutes). When complete, AudiOffice seamlessly syncs with the mobile device’s contacts, so calls can be made.
While calling a colleague to test the system, calls were easily picked up from the attached handset and through the iPhone. Her voice was heard clearly both through speakerphone and the handset, and she said the same for our end. Switching to speakerphone could be used in place of typical speakerphone units used during business meetings.
The device can now be purchased online via Invoxia.com.
