Hamas, Egypt agree to strengthen Gaza ceasefire

Hamas and Egypt agreed to strengthen the ongoing ceasefire between the Palestinian resistance and Israeli occupation, Anadolu reported yesterday.

The news service reported an informed source as saying that the two sides also agreed to accelerate the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, which suffered massive destruction during the latest Israeli offensive in May.

A senior Hamas delegation has been in Cairo since Sunday. They held talks with Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel and discussed several issues, the Hamas source said.

“Progress has been made regarding the ceasefire understandings, accelerating the reconstruction process and easing the blockade,” the source told Anadolu Agency.

According to the source, Egypt pledged to take further steps to improve the economic situation in Gaza and allow the entry of goods via the Rafah border crossing.

Discussions were also held about a possible prisoner swap between the Palestinian resistance and Israel, but they did not make any meaningful progress.

Home to more than two million people, the Gaza Strip has been reeling under a crippling Israeli siege since 2007.
