First, a little bit about a process known as angiogenesis. What is it? It’s when new blood vessels form from existing ones. Now, this process is distinct from vasculogenesis, which is when vessels first form in a developing fetus; angiogenesis is then responsible for most, if not all, blood vessel growth as we develop and during various disease processes and when wounds heal.
But angiogenesis is also fundamental in the transition of tumors from being benign to becoming malignant, so obviously this process is an important one.
What if it were possible to stave off or even prevent that benign-to-malignant tumor transformation – with items you can purchase at the grocery store? Seven foods and drinks have been identified as being capable of achieving this, through their anti-angiogenesis properties.
They are:
Red wine: Resveratrol that is found in the skin of grapes has been found to be a very potent antioxidant, and there is a great deal of this in red wines. In fact, researchers have found that resveratrol is responsible for slowing down the aging process and for decreasing your risk of cardiovascular problems. If you’re not much of a wine drinker, you can always just consume red grapes.
Tomatoes: According to Healthy Food Headlines, recent research from Harvard University found that people who consumed tomatoes regularly were 50 percent less likely to develop prostate cancer, a huge problem in males, especially. That’s because tomatoes contain a high amount of lycopene, which is effective at preventing the ill-effects of angiogenesis. Cooking tomatoes increases the lycopene.
Blueberries and raspberries: These two tasty berries have been found to guard against the development of ovarian cancer. Their effectiveness relates to concentrations of phytochemicals (which also gives them their dark colors), and this has been shown to be an effective cancer preventative.
Other foods that have distinct anti-cancer properties include turmeric, green tea, dark chocolate and, some say, coffee.
