In Revere, Mass. a 14-year-old boy was hit in the back of the head with a golf club and an 11-year-old boy was beaten down to the ground with a golf club while they were out trick or treating. Thirty-five year old fire captain Carl Holberg says he confronted the youth after seeing them cross private property and then feared for his life. He also says he did not actively strike the children, just fended them off. Holmberg’s attorney says it’s a case of self defense since the boys and their 14-year-old companion jumped on and attacked Holmberg after harassing Holmberg’s six-year-old son who was also out trick or treating.
Holmberg pled not guilty after being charged with three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon and one count of assault on a child. He was released on his own recognizance. Because of the felony charges against him, he has been placed on paid administrative leave by his employer. The boys were not seriously hurt.
A golf club beating was more serious for 12-year-old Richard Hernandez of Herperia, California. Out trick or treating with his brother and a friend, they knocked on the door of 35-year-old Randall Colbrum. According to police Coldrum opened the door and attacked Richard by repeatedly hitting him on the head with a golf club until it broke and then stabbing Richard with the shaft. An aluminum bat and a metal pole, both with blood on them, were found at the scene. Witnesses told police Coldrum used both weapons in his attack on Richard.
Randall Coldrum is charged with attempted murder and with using a deadly weapon to inflict great injury. He is being held in jail without bail. Maximum penalty if convicted is life in prison without possibility of parole. Richard Hernandez remains hospitalized (as of Nov. 4) in critical condition.
