Former champion Olympic swimmer Grant Hackett has revealed he was heavily reliant on sleeping pills at the end of his swimming career.
Hackett began using Stilnox after it was given to him by swimming officials, he has told News Limited.
He admitted taking excessive amounts of the drug, but says it was always under the supervision of a team doctor or GP.
Australian Olympic Committee president John Coates told the Sunday Telegraph Olympic team doctors did not prescribe the drug.
“However, we cannot prevent athletes getting access to Stilnox via other doctors or means,” he said.
Other swimmers, including former Olympic champion Michael Klim, confirmed the widespread use of the drug to the newspaper.
“Like many of us, Hacky was prescribed Stilnox by the doctors working with him,” he said.
The drug was used to help swimmers have a good night’s rest while competing under hectic schedules.
