The attackers, riding on motorcycles, opened fire on the bus in the Kech district of the city of Turbat on Friday. Most of the victims came from Pakistan’s central province of Punjab.
Some sources said the workers cam under attack while they were waiting for a pick up to cross the international border through an illegal and tough route to reach Iran.
Pakistani Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf’s office issued a statement condemning the attack, saying, “The cowardly act will not weaken the resolve of the government and people to defeat the forces of evil.”
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but police officials put the blame on Baloch militants or Pro-Taliban groups, who have carried out similar assaults in the past.
Balochistan has been rocked by ethnic and sectarian violence over the past few years.
Thousands of Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001 when Pakistan joined an alliance with the United States in the so-called war against terrorism.
Since late 2009, there has been a surge in militant attacks in Pakistan and thousands more have been displaced by the wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.
