Gunmen attack gas pipeline in Homs

According to reports coming from Syria, the explosion occurred in al-Sultanieh district of Homs on Friday where heavy clashes between Syrian troops and terrorists in the city entered its 13th day.

Fuel pipelines have been targeted several times in Homs since the beginning of unrest in Syria 11 months ago.

On Wednesday, an explosion hit a fuel pipeline in the city’s Baba Amr district, which supplied the capital, Damascus, and the south of the country.

Meanwhile, Mauritanian Prime Minister Moulaye Ould Mohamed Laghdaf has arrived in Syria and hold talks with President Assad. The meeting focus was reportedly on developments in Syria. Laghdaf also handed a letter from Mauritanian president to Assad.

The Syrian President told the Mauritanian premier that reforms cannot be implemented without peace.

”The political reforms carried out by the state must move in parallel with efforts to restore security and stability and protect civilians,” SANA quoted Assad as saying.

Syria is planning to hold a referendum on the new draft constitution in less than ten days on February 26.

The proposed new constitution allows a multi-party political system and does not include Article 8, which gave the Baath Party a dominant role in Syria’s political scene.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March and many people have lost their lives in the violence.

The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters. But Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
