Sugar Babes brothel shooting

Police believe about eight shots were fired at the brothel.

Two prostitutes have escaped injury as a brothel was hit by gunshots in Sydney’s west overnight.

Police say about eight shots were fired into a window of the Sugar Babes brothel at Granville just after 11:00pm (AEDT).

Detectives say there is nothing to indicate that bikies or other gangs were behind the attack.

Acting Inspector Dane Sinclair says the shooter was caught on security cameras.

“We have witnesses that heard the shots, but we are following up a number of leads in relation to CCTV footage, not only from those premises but from premises that are all along that street that do possess CCTV cameras,” he said.

“We believe it was a male person who’s fired a number of shots at the business premises.

“The part of the building which was the first floor that was fired at, it was vacant.”

Detectives from Operation Spartan have joined local officers to investigate the shooting.

The operation was launched in January in response to scores of shootings across Sydney over the past year.

Opposition Leader John Robertson says last night’s incident continues a decade-high spike in gun crime.

“With another shooting overnight, it just continues to highlight that we don’t have enough police on our streets in western and south-western Sydney,” he said.

“The Greater Sydney metropolitan area is now 242 officers down on the minimum requirements, and while ever those shortages continue and police are under-resourced we’re going to see this spate of gun crime continue.”
