Marcus Neves-Polonio, 19, who was working in the food court, said he saw a man
pull out a gun and start firing. He added: “All of a sudden a herd of
people were just running toward us, a massive crowd of people screaming,
running, freaking out.”
Brett Lawrie, a baseball player for the Toronto Blue Jays was in the mall when
the shooting took place and was one of the first to report the tragedy on Twitter.
Canada
has stringent controls on handguns and a lower rate of gun-related violence
than the United States.
The city of Toronto prides itself on being one of the safest cities in North
America, but mass shootings are not unknown.
On Dec 26, 2005 a 15-year-old girl was killed in the crossfire of a
gang-related shoot-out close to the Eaton Centre.
