Gun parts found in toys at US airport

American transportation officials said on Tuesday, however, that they allowed the four-year-old passenger with his father to continue their flight to the City of Detroit after being convinced that they did not pose a security risk.

The father apparently told security authorities that he was not aware that the gun components were inside the toys animals.

“It appears to be the result of a domestic dispute,” Rhode Island Airport Police Chief Leo Messier told reporters. “It was jointly investigated by the RI Airport Police, FBI and the RI State Police and it was determined that there was no threat at any time to air safety.”

According to a local TV station, a gun magazine loaded with two .40-caliber rounds along with a firing pin were discovered inside the stuffed animals.

Authorities with the airport police and the US Transportation Security Administration, however, refused to elaborate further on the incident, only saying that the matter is still under investigation.

Officials said the discovered gun parts could have been assembled to make a full firearm. Meanwhile, the items were confiscated and the names of the passengers carrying the toy animals were not released.
