Grubby politics in WA, opposition says

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett must sack a staffer who leaked false information to the media about Opposition Leader Mark McGowan or risk creating a “grubby” political culture, the opposition says.

Shadow Treasurer Ben Wyatt told reporters in Perth on Monday that a senior political adviser for Mr Barnett had sent a text message to journalists on January 16, alerting them that Mr McGowan was at a pub.

Mr McGowan was actually at home with his children at the time.

Mr Wyatt said the same staffer also sent an “abusive” email to journalists with photos of Mr McGowan’s Rockingham house, in Perth’s south.

It has since been reported that Mr McGowan, who has labelled himself a regular family man with working class credentials, owns a home worth $1.4 million, similar to Mr Barnett’s beachside property in Cottesloe.

Mr Wyatt said a “grubby political culture” was emerging out of Mr Barnett’s office if the premier was endorsing his staff to bring families into politics.

“Does Colin Barnett endorse this? Did he know about this? And if not, what’s he going to do about it?” he said.

“I shudder to think that this is the way the next 12 months is going to progress in the lead-up to an election, where traditionally family homes, families, have not been part of the public debate.

“It appears that Colin Barnett’s office, now on a number of occasions is peddling lies by way of mobile phones, and abuse by way of emails.”

Mr Wyatt said Prime Minister Julia Gillard had set the standard by sacking a staffer for leaking information about federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, and Mr Barnett should do the same.

“What we are seeing in Canberra is the fallout of somebody who stupidly, scurrilously leaks information,” he said.

“Will he (Mr Barnett) stand up and sack this political adviser as Julia Gillard did with hers, or will he endorse this particular behaviour that I think is obscene in evidence of a grubby political culture in Colin Barnett’s office?”
