Back in high school we had a homeroom teacher who taught us government and history.
Some days the students right before class would begin would come to me and a girl I hung with and tell us they did not want to listen to the lesson that day so for us to get our teacher off on a trail which had nothing to do with the lesson.
This girl and I would decide on a topic, them ask each other, which side do you want to play?
We would then start arguing like we really gave a shit about the side of the topic we had agreed on.
The teacher would try to moderate and inject some calm into the debate.
We would burn up the whole class period without anything being learned by the class.
At the end of the period, the teacher would always say, well, we did not cover the class lesson but I hope you learned something from this discussion.
We played her time after time.
