Independent Alex Greenwich has won the by-election for the New South Wales state seat of Sydney.

Mr Greenwich received more than 48 percent of the primary vote on Saturday.

“I probably was surprised that it was such a convincing defeat of the O’Farrell Government,” he said.

Mr Greenwich says he’ll focus on protecting the housing commission community in the inner-city and will introduce a bill for same-sex marriage.

His Liberal rival Shayne Mallard secured about 30 percent and the Greens’ candidate Chris Harris won about 18 percent.

Mr Mallard says he thought the by-election would have been a closer contest.

He says the Clover Moore factor was hard to defeat.

She had held the seat for 24 years.

Mr Harris says he was surprised too by the number of votes Mr Greenwich secured.

“We didn’t think that he would achieve the vote he has achieved….. (he) was up around in the high 40s which is even more than Clover Moore got which is pretty surprising,” he said.

“I don’t know how anybody could have predicted that”.

The by-election was called after State Government legislation forced Clover Moore to choose between her dual roles as MP and Sydney Lord Mayor.

Ms Moore had backed Mr Greenwich as her successor and he acknowledged the role Ms Moore played.

“Having her support and having her endorsement was I feel a major factor in my victory”.

The Labor Party didn’t field a candidate but its spokesman MP Walt Secord says voters are punishing Premier Barry O’Farrell.

“Barry O’Farrell removed a democratically elected MP and he was punished. There are three reasons. Education cuts, broken promises on health and getting rid of a democratically elected MP,” Mr Secord said.

ABC election analysis shows a swing of 12 percent to the independent while the Liberals sustained a swing of 6.4 percent against them.
