Greens will still support budget: Milne

The Australian Greens are very concerned that more 3000 public servants will lose their jobs, but the minor party still plans to support the government’s budget in parliament.

Greens Leader Christine Milne said the party would assess each bill on whether it supported the needs of Australia’s most vulnerable people.

“We will certainly guarantee the government’s supply,” she told reporters in Canberra on Tuesday.

“There is no question about that, so those bills will go through.

“But I have to say, I am very seriously concerned about 3000 public servants losing their job in this budget.”

Senator Milne said Labor’s decision to provide a one-off $210 payment to people on the Newstart allowance was an “insult”.

“People living on Newstart are living below the poverty line, and we needed to have at least $50 a week for them.”
