The Greens are calling on the Federal Government to amend the Marriage Act.

The Tasmanian Greens are trying a new tactic to legalise same sex marriage by putting pressure on the Federal Government to act rather than risk another defeat in state parliament.
The Greens have tried and failed to gain support for their gay marriage bill in the past and leader, Nick McKim, says it is unlikely the legislation would pass if reintroduced.
Instead, he says his party will bring on a motion in Parliament this week to allow lower house members to express in-principle support for marriage equality and call on the Federal Government to amend the Marriage Act.
“It’s about sending a message to the Commonwealth Parliament,” he said.
Labor will consider the motion.
But Liberal spokesperson Elise Archer says it is a watered down approach and has indicated it is unlikely to gain opposition support.
“The Liberals’ long-standing position has been that we support the definition of marriage in the Marriage Act.”
Rodney Croome from the Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group wants to see the State Opposition support the cause.
State Labor conferences have overwhelmingly supported it, so I’m confident that Labor MPs will be backing it and really, the Liberals should be backing it as well.
“Particularly given that we’ve seen support for this issue from leading global conservatives like the Prime Minister of Britain, David Cameron, and the former US Vice-President Dick Cheney.”
