Greeks furious over Germans’ meddling

The article published both in German and Greek, read: “Dear Greeks, create clear political conditions. Vote courageously for reforms instead of angrily against the necessary, painful structural changes.”

“Your country will only be able to keep the euro with parties that accept the conditions of the international creditors, resist the demagoguery of Alexis Tsipras and his (radical-left party) Syriza,” the call added.

The article was apparently aimed to support Antonis Samaras’ New Democracy Party.

The article elicited harsh criticism from the radical leftist party, Syriza, which called it “a crude and unprecedented intervention, which offends national dignity [of Greece] and tries to undermine democracy.”

The leftist party official, Dimitris Papadimoulis, noted that the only thing left is for the German Chancellor Angela Merkel to “come and hand out ballots for the right.”

The New Democracy party itself dismissed German’s endorsement of it and issued a statement, saying: “We are a proud people, we do not want orders. We do not want provocation and manipulation.”

The Greeks, whose country is currently going through dire economic straits, see Germany as the main force behind the harsh austerity measures implemented in their country in the recent gloomy years of economic hardships.
